Mercedes driver George Russell spoke about why he was interested in the possibility of the team using tactics at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.


Russell and Hamilton were close at the restart of the race after the safety car left the track. And Russell asked the stable if it was worth waiting for the team to use tactics or if the Mercedes pilots were free to fight each other.


The team replied to Russell that he and Hamilton were allowed to fight each other, but it had to be done with respect for each other:


Am I surprised by this answer? Yes and no. We are always told that we are free to fight each other. Toto and the team trust both me and Lewis. This year we had several cases of fighting side by side and we always acted carefully. I also think that we have a lot of respect for each other.


I just wanted to understand our position, because I understood how important it would be for the team to make a double. If we didn`t fight, we would just have to get to the finish line. And if we fought, then every lap we would drive like in a qualifying mode, risking in every turn, because in such a fight you have to perform excellently (if you want to win). But in any case, I`m happy that I managed to win.
