Jackie Stewart has revealed how motorsport and Formula One came under threat in the 1960s.


Stewart, who competed in F1 from 1965 to 1973, was one of those who pushed for safety changes. According to the three-time champion, the situation was so dire that there was a question about the existence of motorsport.


It had to be done because things were so bad. I think if we didn`t do this, the insurance companies would shut down the races.


The worst was Le Mans [1955], when 82 people died in the 24-hour race. The crowd could have been swept away so many times because there were no debris nets or anything like that. The situation needed to change, " Stewart said.
